Mom braces for chaos—but her toddler’s response to the crying baby stuns her
When you’ve got two kids under two, you brace yourself for chaos. Sleepless nights, meltdowns on repeat, and maybe—if you’re lucky—a few fleeting minutes of peace. What you don’t usually expect? Your toddler suddenly stepping up as the sweetest big sister.
Scottish mom Kiera Crawford was at home when her 9-week-old daughter, Hallie, started crying while her 19-month-old, Cadie, played. Up until then, Cadie had shown little interest in her baby sister.
“She never interacted with her,” Crawford told Newsweek. “I think with them being so close in age, she’s still a baby herself.” In the clip—now seen more than 136.6K times on TikTok (@kieracrawfordx)—Cadie gently picked up Hallie’s dummy and placed it back in her mouth, soothing her instantly.
A simple gesture, but for Crawford, it was everything. “Something told me to just sit back and let this unfold and oh my god I’m so glad I did,” she captioned the post.

The fear of having ‘two under two’ is so real
Like many parents expecting a second baby so soon, Crawford admits she was nervous. “When I was pregnant with Hallie, I was so nervous about having two under two and was constantly looking on TikTok for reassurance,” she told Newsweek. At that moment, Cadie gave her mom the comfort she had been seeking online. “I’m so glad I filmed it. It was sweeter than I could’ve imagined,” she shared with Newsweek.
Viewers saw the start of a sibling bond in the making
Parents in the comments called the video “so precious” and “the start of a beautiful bond.” For moms deep in the trenches of early childhood, it’s a hopeful reminder: sibling love doesn’t always appear overnight, but it can bloom in the smallest, most ordinary acts of care.

Moments like these shape how siblings grow together
Even the smallest gestures of care—from comforting a crying sibling to softly offering a toy—play a meaningful role in a child’s emotional development.
According to Frontiers in Psychology, toddlers’ empathic responses (i.e. showing concern or distress when someone else is upset) are closely tied to their capacity for emotion regulation, perspective-taking, and social environment support.
Moreover, research published in Society for Research in Child Development says that sibling development shows that both older and younger siblings can positively influence one another’s empathy over time, beyond just parental modeling.
So in the chaos of “two under two,” parents may not only witness mess and exhaustion but also the very roots of empathy, trust, and lifelong connection growing quietly through small, tender acts.
