The Trailer For 'Toy Story 5' Is Here & Every Parent Is *Feeling* It
If there’s one thing you can count on when you watch the 1995 classic Toy Story or one of its sequels, it’s that all your heartstrings will be pulled — a big reason this franchise packs such an emotional wallop is because it speaks to the big issues and milestone moments parents face as their kids grow up. Hitting on that very successful formula, Disney previously revealed the focus of its upcoming Toy Story 5: toys vs. technology. And now, the new trailer confirms just how much of an impact Bonnie’s new device will have on her playtime... and her toys.
Of course, Toy Story remains one of the most beloved Disney brands: A generation of kids watched Andy grow up and grew up with him, and some of us who were kids when the first film hit theaters have now moved on to sharing pals Woody and Buzz with our own kids. But it’s incredible to me how Disney has managed to create a story that appeals to everyone — from our kids to us original Toy Story fans becoming parents — and the trailer really proves that.
While all fine details haven't been released yet, here's what we know about Toy Story 5.
What's Toy Story 5 about?
If you remember anything about 2019's Toy Story 4 ending, it's that it saw the separation of Buzz and Woody. Woody, who Bonnie had grown a little apart from, decides to stay with Bo Peep and become a “lost toy” with their new friends. Meanwhile, Buzz and the rest of Bonnie's toys returned to the RV to continue on with Bonnie, literally rolling off into the sunset without their fearless leader, Woody.
Ever since the news about Toy Story 5 was released, fans have been wondering just how they’ll get Woody and the gang back together. In the trailer, we learn that Jessie and Woody have been communicating with a set of ancient walkie-talkies (no idea where they found those, hopefully we’ll learn). As Bonnie becomes obsessed with her new tablet, Jessie gives Woody a call and, finally, the gang’s all there.
Throughout the trailer, there is also a theme of the toys working hard to help Bonnie make friends over the summer (the franchise has clocked that she’s a shy girl and a little nervous about new situations), and all of them being more than a little miffed about technology taking over. With Woody there, it seems like the toys not only want Bonnie to play with them again, but also to find her way — there are a couple of scenes where Bonnie could be interacting with friends, but turns to her tablet instead.
Who's on board for Toy Story 5?
Who's in and who's out for Toy Story 5 has been on everyone’s mind, but so far, it looks like most of the gang is there. While the franchise has lost a few of its actors, like Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, that hasn’t stopped the character. Like in Toy Story 4, Mr. Potato Head is back, along with Mrs. Potato Head, and those Pizza Planet aliens that call them their parents. We also see Rex, Hamm, Dolly, Mr. Pricklepants (although it looks like Timothy Dalton is no longer his voice, which is a real shame), Trixie, Slinky, Buttercup, and, yes, Forky and his new lady from the end of Toy Story 4.
Of course, Buzz and Woody are there, along with Jessie and Bullseye.
On IMDB, all of the original actors are listed, including Ernie Hudson making a comeback as Combat Carl. But Bo Peep is nowhere to be seen in the trailer, and she — and her voice actor, Annie Potts — are not listed on IMDB. But other characters we do see in the trailer, like the Potato Heads, Hamm, Rex, and more, aren’t listed on IMDB either. So it’s hard to say for certain which characters are missing.
But one fun new thing: Conan O’Brien is also listed, playing a character named Smarty Pants. Yes, please.
When will Toy Story 5 be released?
For the perfect summer movie, Toy Story 5 is set for release on June 19, 2026. It will premiere in theaters and then, like other Disney movies, will eventually make its way to streaming platforms to rent before living on Disney+ at some point.
And I, for one, can’t wait. I remember going to the original Toy Story in theaters as a kid, and all of my kids have grown up with the franchise. To take them to see another one in theaters — and have the plot hit so close to home — is a little more than I can handle. Buzz really meant it when he said, “To infinity... and beyond.”
