'Hacks' Just Dropped The Trailer For Its Final Season, & We Are Unwell

The world might be on fire, but there’s at least one little bitty thing to keep us going: HBO Max just dropped the trailer for the fifth season of Hacks, and it looks like everything we could have hoped for and more. The downside? With the trailer came the confirmation that this will be the celebrated series' final bow.

Over its first four seasons, the comedy-drama, which centers on legendary comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her behind-the-scenes writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), has been nominated for a whopping 62 Emmy Awards and won 12, including Outstanding Comedy Series. And Deborah and Ava’s love-hate relationship has only gotten deeper, funnier, and more complex over the past four years.

Here’s everything we know about the fifth and final season.

When will Hacks Season 5 air?

Every other season of Hacks has aired roughly one year apart and, true to form, we’ll be getting the same here: Season 5 will premiere on Thursday, April 9, at 9 p.m. ET.

According to HBO Max, the season will consist of 10 episodes in total. New episodes will drop every week, with two episodes dropping the weeks of April 30 and May 7, culminating in the series finale on Thursday, May 28.

Who will return for Hacks Season 5?

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder will obviously be returning to their roles, for what even is Hacks without those two queens?

Also confirmed for Season 5 are regulars Paul W. Downs (Jimmy), Megan Stalter (Kayla), Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Marcus), Mark Indelicato (Damien), and Rose Abdoo (Josefina). Returning as guest stars ae Robby Hoffman (Randi), Tony Goldwyn (Bob), Kaitlin Olson (DJ), Christopher McDonald (Marty), Jane Adams (Nina), Lauren Weedman (Jo), Poppy Liu (Kiki), Johnny Sibilly (Wilson), Luenell (Miss Loretta), Angela E. Gibbs (Robin), and Caitlin Reilly (Jessica).

Joining the cast for the final season are The Summer I Turned Pretty star Christopher Briney (good news for all you Conrad stans!), Leslie Bibb, Cherry Jones, and Ann Dowd.

What will happen in Hacks Season 5?

By the end of Season 4, Deborah is reeling from the loss of her late-night show, and the future is very uncertain. She and Ava closed the season in Singapore, where they found a workaround to the non-compete clause that forbade her from performing on stage. But they get thrown for another loop when TMZ falsely reports Deborah’s death.

Season 5 picks up there. “In the aftermath of mistaken and unflattering news reports that she passed away, Deborah and Ava return to Las Vegas more determined than ever to secure Deborah’s legacy as a comedian,” reads the logline.

Outside of that, there are a few other things we know for sure. For starters, Deborah and Ava have thrown in together and will stay that way — it might have taken four seasons, but in Season 5, the pair looks like they will hit the ground running together.

And we know, without a doubt, that Hacks is committed to sticking the landing for its fans. “The final scene of the final episode has been in our minds since 2015, and we're excited to get there,” co-showrunner Paul Downs told Variety of the buildup to the show’s big goodbye.

So, get ready — this one’s going to be emotional.
