Spilled Milk: Feeding Unfiltered with Bretagne
When her milk production couldn’t keep up with her son’s needs and other formulas made him constipated and colicky, Kendamil Comfort UK came to the rescue.
Bretagne is a first-time mom who's absolutely enamoured by her son, Harvey, a sweet little 7-month-old who’s enriched her life and deepened her experience for love beyond what she thought possible. Just two minutes into our interview, she got teary-eyed as she reflected on the connection she has with him, a moment where her love is palpable.
Bretagne comes across as a born-to-be mother, caring, protective, and inherently nurturing. After whirring through her pregnancy like a breeze and delivering her baby medication-free in just 3 pushes, she assumed that feeding would follow a similar trajectory, i.e., simple, but in her own words,
‘‘Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s easy.’’
Like many mothers, Bretagne imagined that she’d be exclusively breastfeeding for her son’s entire first year, and if it were totally within her control, she would be. But as she’d like other moms to know,
‘‘There are some things that are just out of your control, and that doesn't mean you have failed; in fact, it means that you have shown up despite things not going the way that you planned.’’
When starting out breastfeeding, little Harvey struggled to latch and was exhausting himself trying to get enough milk out. He was consistently hungry, not sleeping, unhappy, and fussy.
Worried about his well-being, Bretagne sought the help of a lactation specialist and ran through the gamut of advice on breastfeeding positions and maternal diet tips. But when her doctor expressed concern that her son was falling short of his growth milestones, she knew she needed a solution, and on her pediatrician's advice, she turned to formula.
‘‘I care more about my baby being healthy and happy than the milk coming from me.’’

With a stockpile of formula samples sent to her for free by big brands, Bretagne wondered whether any of them were the right choice for her son. Moreover, the questionable ingredient lists of these products left her feeling unsettled.
From her previous time spent living in Germany and later working in the pharmaceutical industry, she was aware of Europe’s strict nutrition standards. She felt that a European formula would offer Harvey the best of both worlds: the nutrients he needed, without compromising on the quality he deserved.
It took some trial and error, and the first formula was a miss. Returning to her doctor for guidance, she was advised to look specifically for a formula made for colic and constipation, which led her to her son’s perfect match, Kendamil Comfort formula.
‘‘It was instant relief for him, and it has been a godsend. That has been our go-to formula.’’

Kendamil Comfort is a specialty formula crafted in the UK with ingredients designed to help manage colic and constipation. Its soothing recipe combines the brand's signature ingredients, including high-quality whole cow’s milk, a reduced mixture of palm-free vegetable oils, nourishing prebiotics, and brain-boosting plant-based DHA, but in an optimally digestible formulation.
That means less lactose overall, partially hydrolyzed whey instead of intact proteins, and more alpha-lactalbumin. The result? It encourages regular bowel movements and calms tummies, enhancing digestive comfort and reducing crying.
‘‘Our big concern was that [our son] was underweight, but now, since being on the formula, his weight has consistently stayed in the healthy average, and his head circumference is also where it should be... Now he’s growing so perfectly, I’m just so grateful that we were able to find something that could help him.’’

While it may not have been a part of the plan, formula has been an indispensable part of Bretagne's feeding journey, and it’s helping Harvey thrive. That’s not to say it’s been an easy decision for Bretagne to make, but it’s been the right choice for her family.
‘‘So yes, there is a feeling of sadness, [about not breastfeeding exclusively], but then I realized that it wasn’t about me. Remember, when you become a mom, it's not about you, it's about your baby, and so as long as my baby is well-fed, then I am fine.’’
