As has become abundantly clear since the world first met Anna and Elsa of Arendelle in 2013, no one is ready to “let it go” when it comes to the Frozen franchise (at least not yet). And thanks to Disney, you don’t have to. During a Q1 earnings call in February 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed Frozen 3 is officially in the works, but since then, details on the third installment have been few and far between... until now.
At D23, Disney’s annual fan expo where they share all their biggest announcements and updates, they spilled lots of new details about Frozen 3, including a release date and concept art. Here’s everything we know so far.
When will Frozen 3 be released?
Frozen 3 will hit theaters on Nov. 24, 2027.
While Disney did not release a trailer or even a teaser for the film, they did share concept art showing Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf looking out over an icy, enchanted meadow with the Northern Lights glowing purple in the night sky above.
Who’s returning for Frozen 3?
Fear thee not, Frozen fans: All the key players are reprising their roles. At D23, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel took the stage to announce the movie’s release date after singing “Frozen Heart,” a song from the original movie’s soundtrack. They were then joined on stage by Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf, for a little performance of his own about Olaf’s new love interest, Samantha. So, we can safely assume the three of them are all the way on board for Round 3.
Who else from the existing cast will return? Jonathan Groff is confirmed to return as Kristoff, according to Variety.
What will Frozen 3 be about?
We know from Gad’s song that we are finally going to learn more about snowwoman Samantha, and presumably why Olaf is so taken with her. Other plot details have been kept under wraps; all that has been made public is that this movie will center on Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, and there will be a villain.
In her presentation at D23, Bell described this movie as Elsa and Anna’s “biggest journey yet.”
“In this new adventure, love is in the air — for everyone!” Menzel chimed in. “Even Olaf,” said Gad, joining them onstage. Frozen 3 will take our characters to a wild and dangerous frozen landscape far from Arendelle, the group shared.
In Frozen 2, fans learned that Elsa is the fifth spirit, a magical being connecting humanity and the elements. Fan theories about the third movie’s plot suggest that Elsa’s character arc parallels Norse mythology. In previous concept art shared by Disney, Elsa and Anna are depicted approaching a magical kingdom in the sky, with a horned shadow wielding a spear approaching from behind. Could it be that an Odin-like figure is threatened by Elsa’s power? Will she have to ascend to some higher place and leave Arendelle in Anna’s hands?
We are still a long ways off from plopping down in a theater chair and seeing what unfolds for our favorite sisters, but rest assured, Frozen 3 is coming. Don’t even get us started on Frozen 4.
