Fans look forward to Disney’s D23 expo every year because it always brings huge news about the Disney parks, movies, shows, and more — and this year proved to be no exception. Among the exciting updates dropped during this year’s three-day event? That the new Monsters, Inc. Land — proper name, Monstropolis — is opening to Disney World park guests in 2027. And we finally got a peek at just what we humans will get to see when it does.
Monstropolis will be nestled inside Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. According to Disney Parks Blog, the concept behind the monstrous city picks up at the end of Monsters, Inc.:
“As Monstropolis evolved, so did its connection with the human world. You may have heard of the HR department, but you haven’t heard of this HR department … that’s right, I’m talking about the Department of Human Relations. This new team established by the city has been tasked with sinking their teeth — and in some cases, their very BIG teeth — into helping monsters better understand humans as welcomed guests.
“The newly instated department has been spearheading a moment that was once thought impossible: inviting humans into Monstropolis for the very first time. And that invitation has a name. H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for ‘Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice,’ marks a historic milestone for the city. Part celebration, part cultural exchange, the event is designed to introduce humans to life inside Monstropolis while helping monsters discover that humans are not so frightening after all. Now that’s something to snarl — ahem, smile about!”

The new Monstropolis will include:
- The Glob Theater, which will host the show “Welcome to Monstropolis”
- Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza (a pizza restaurant)
- Harryhausen’s Restaurant, the site of Mike and Celia’s ill-fated date
- Scareporium (a gift shop)
- Monsters University Alumni Club (a tribute to legendary scarers and alumni)
- A doors-themed coaster
Monstropolis is opening in two phases, and alas, the door coaster is part of Phase 2, which does not have a confirmed opening date just yet. But one day in the not-too-distant future, we’ll all finally get to experience the incredible door vault transportation system that sparked imaginations everywhere when the original film was first released in 2001.
“The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro admitted to the D23 crowd in 2025. “You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”

While previous Monsters, Inc. attractions have opened at other parks around the world — specifically Disney California Adventure and Tokyo Disneyland — this new addition to Hollywood Studios marks the first major Monsters, Inc. tribute at Disney World.
Up to this point, fans of the franchise who visit the Florida parks have had to make do with two small Monsters, Inc.-themed attractions: Magic Kingdom’s Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor (an underrated experience if you ask me, especially since it has excellent air conditioning) and Hollywood Studios’ Sulley meet-and-greet.
Before we know it, we’ll all be strolling the streets of Monstropolis alongside some of our favorite monsters. No word on whether Boo will make a cameo, but here’s hoping!
